Description
Derrick McManus motivational speaker sessions come from a former Sniper, Special Ops Diver and Counter-Terrorist Operative. He served with the elite Special Tasks and Rescue Group of the South Australian Police. During a high-risk arrest in 1994, he was shot 14 times in less than 5 seconds with a high-powered rifle. He was then left bleeding on the ground for three hours before rescuers reached him. The first doctor to see him later said he had almost lost all his blood. He still did not know how Derrick survived.
Why book Derrick McManus as your motivational speaker
Derrick believes he survived because of a process he now calls Human Durability. Before the shooting, he had prepared himself physically, mentally and emotionally. He was ready for what he might realistically face because of the choices he made in life. As a result, that preparation carried him through the worst five seconds of his life. It also carried him through the three hours that followed.
Today, Human Durability is the framework Derrick shares with audiences worldwide. It helps people, leaders and organisations prepare themselves. As a result, they can sustain optimum performance under pressure. The model works as well in the schoolyard as it does in the CEO suite. So it applies just as much to everyday life as it does to the extremes of business and crisis.
In his keynotes, Derrick covers building confidence, courage and capacity for success. He also covers building both resilience and durability, interpreting challenges differently, and anticipating problems before they arise. Beyond keynotes, he runs life-changing personal development programs. These range from breakout sessions to full and half-day workshops that inspire people to believe they can change their lives for the better.

Derrick McManus was a Sniper, Tactical Diver and Counter-Terrorist Operative with the SA Police Special Task and Rescue (STAR) Group when he was shot 14 times with a high-powered rifle in less than 5 seconds. He was lying on the ground bleeding for 3 hours before he could be rescued. Dr. Bill Griggs said, “I don’t know how he survived, he’s an incredible human being”.
However, despite the circumstances Derrick sustained optimum performance. Optimum is not perfect and it’s not always peak performance – it’s optimum dependant on the external circumstances. Derrick didn’t just survive the worst shooting in South Australia’s history, he positively thrived afterwards. After two and a half years Derrick returned to full duties with STAR Group.
