Description

Jelena Dokic motivational speaker sessions draw on one of the most remarkable stories in Australian sport. A former world No. 4, she is now a tennis commentator, a two time bestselling author and a TEDx presenter.

Jelena Dokic Motivational Speaker: From Refugee to World No. 4

Jelena was born in Osijek in 1983 and arrived in Australia as an 11 year old refugee in 1994. Remarkably, within five years she was taking on the best players in the world.

At 16, as a qualifier ranked 129, she beat world No. 1 Martina Hingis at Wimbledon and went on to reach the quarterfinals. Then, at 17, she reached the Wimbledon semifinals and finished fourth at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. At 18 she was a Grand Slam doubles finalist. In 2002 she climbed to world No. 4, and she went on to win six WTA singles titles.

The Battle Behind the Scoreboard

Behind the results, Jelena endured years of abuse from her father, who was also her coach. At the same time, she faced bullying and racism. That trauma took a toll on her mental health, and she has spoken openly about her depression.

At 22, she hit breaking point. However, she made the choice to be resilient, aiming to thrive rather than simply survive. In 2009 she returned to the Australian Open as a wildcard and reached the quarterfinals. Eventually, she retired from professional tennis in 2014.

Today Jelena shares her story in her bestselling books Unbreakable (2017) and Fearless: Finding the Power to Thrive (2023). In 2025 the documentary Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story was named Feature Documentary Production of the Year at the Screen Producers Australia Awards. It also won the Logie for Best Factual or Documentary Program. In addition, she is part of Nine’s coverage of the Australian Open and other Grand Slams.
